WHAT IS MATERIALS CHEMISTRY?

Materials chemistry focuses on understanding the relationship between the atomic structure of a material and its overall behaviour. It is central to the design, manufacture, characterisation and understanding of materials with useful physical properties that drive development of new products and processes.

It is a vital enabler of the new sustainable solutions for society and industry – especially in developing advanced materials required for health and energy applications, and in the development of replacements for scarce raw materials. Because of its central role, it drives economic growth across a wide range of sectors.

The Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (KCMC) has a leading role in driving product innovation in the chemistry-using industries by the application of materials chemistry, delivered through collaborative R&D from a world class centre of excellence.

Dr Robert Sorrell, BP

“Materials chemistry has come a long way driven by cross disciplinary collaboration involving chemists, mathematicians, engineers, materials scientists and physicists”

David Willetts MP

“Advanced materials are a key tool for advanced manufacturing. UK businesses that produce and process materials have a turnover of around £170bn pa, represent 15% of the country’s GDP and have exports valued at £50 billion.”
